Add cornmeal to cold water and stir. Add boiling water and salt and bring this mixture to boiling point, stirring constantly. Put into large mixing bowl and add molasses and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Mix using electric mixer for 3-4 cups and remainder by hand.

Turn onto lightly floured board, knead well. Place dough in a greased bowl and let rise until doubled in size, about 1-1/2 hours. Turn dough onto lightly floured board again, punch down, let dough rest a few minutes, mold into loaves and place in 2 greased pans and allow to rise about 2 hours in pans until about doubled in size.

Brush tops of loaves with melted butter, a little cornmeal and salt. Bake until a rich brown at 375 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
